What Makes us Clever? Just watching this show on BBC Four. Brilliant btw

They showed a cave where they discovered the earliest evidence of intelligence in art. A ochre carved with a pattern, three lines with crosses.

I recognised this pattern, back in art school I started drawing images that communicated that thoughts where patterns in biology. I made some sketches of patterns that existed naturally and, many of the sketches, I made were of the surface of my skin on the back of my hand. The drawings looked like the scores found in the cave in South Africa. It is not a wonder I dropped out of art school, I was only as good as a cave person.
